Emily the Cow dies at Peace Abbey
Tuesday, April 1, 2003
SHERBORN - Emily the Cow, who caught the attention of the region and
ultimately Hollywood when she escaped from a Hopkinton slaughterhouse
eight years ago, has died.
Sherborn's Peace Abbey, where Emily has resided in tranquility since
her dash to freedom, announced Emily's death yesterday in an e-mail
to the cow's countless supporters.
"Please e-mail us with your story on how Emily touched your life.
Thanks for taking the time it takes to respond in her honor. Our hearts
are broken," the Abbey's message states.
The cause of death was uterine cancer. Emily was 10.
A movie about Emily's exploits, detailed in The News eight years ago,
is being made into a Hollywood movie. A script is now being finalized,
according to the producers.
Emily jumped a fence at the Hopkinton slaughterhouse and escaped into
the woods where she remained for 40 days until members of the Peace
Abbey caught her and paid $1 to the slaughterhouse to keep her.
A memorial service will be held tonight at 7 in the Quaker room in
the Abbey Conference Center in Sherborn's historic center (at the
junction of routes 16 and 27.)
"Emily was an amazing creature that blessed the lives of thousands
and helped countless people on their journey to vegetarianism," the
Abbey wrote in their e-mail.
The e-mail ends with an anti-war message: "And with her passing comes
a reminder that when human beings wage war, defenseless animals pay
the biggest price."
