MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Peace Abbey Foundation is to create and install public works of art that promote peace and nonviolence; and to administer and care for Abbey Interfaith Peace Chaplaincy, The Pacifist Memorial, The Animal Rights Memorial, Abbey Cremation Cemetery for Conscientious Objectors, and the National Registry for Conscientious Objection.  Throughout the year, the Foundation presents the Int’l Courage of Conscience Award at conferences and peace ceremonies and extends the impact of the Peace Seeds interfaith prayers for peace through their dissemination worldwide.

We conduct and support programs that bring together and promote the cooperation of people of different faith traditions and non-theists as well. We do this in the spirit of the 1986 International Day of Prayer for World Peace, as celebrated that year by religious leaders from around the globe in Assisi, Italy.

The Foundation supports grassroots efforts to link the many dimensions of the peace movement with a committed emphasis on human rights and animal rights. We recognize these two dimensions of intrinsic rights as inextricably interconnected, just as social and economic justice require environmental sustainability and deep respect for the biosphere. Central to our universalist approach is the premise that nonviolence is the most effective and long-term strategy in addressing the multitude of challenges that now threaten our increasingly imperiled planet.

GLOBAL PANDEMICS TOUCHSTONE

The inscription on the stone, “Global Pandemics: A Touchstone for Humanity” is particularly appropriate for Hart Island due to its historical significance as a mass, unmarked burial site for over 1 million New Yorkers, many of whom died from contagious disease. Here are a few reasons why this stone and message hold significance in this context:

Commemoration: The stone serves as a memorial to honor the lives lost to global pandemics, particularly in the case of Hart Island, where a significant number of New Yorkers who succumbed to contagious diseases were laid to rest. It acknowledges the magnitude of the impact that pandemics have had on humanity and pays tribute to those who lost their lives.
2. Historical Reflection: Hart Island’s history as a burial site for individuals who died from contagious diseases (HIV/AIDS, COVID-19), as well as societal diseases (war, poverty, homelessness, gun violence, healthcare disparities), provides a somber reminder of the impact of pandemics throughout history.  By placing the stone on Hart Island, it highlights the ongoing struggle of humanity against pandemic outbreaks and prompts reflection on past diseases that have resulted in widespread death.

Overall, the stone and its message are appropriate on Hart Island because they provide a tangible representation of the scale and impact of global pandemics, while honoring the lives lost and prompting reflection on the shared experiences of humanity in the face of such crises.

Bayard Rustin

Bayard Rustin was an American political activist, a prominent leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. Rustin was the principal organizer of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.

Fred Rogers

Fred Rogers, better known as Mister Rogers, was an American television host, author, producer, and Presbyterian minister. He was the creator and host of the pre-school television series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, which ran from 1968 to 2001. He devoted his life to educating young children to be kind, gentle, and thoughtful peacemakers.

A Commemorative STONEWALK plaque will be unveiled on the back of the CIVILIAN MEMORIAL STONE tracing the Global journey of Stonewalk.
